During the 2008 fall U-pick season, River Field Farm will not be open to the public. This fall season we will be culling 50% of the pecan trees that were planted in a double density scheme in 1987 to provide increased early production. Now that the trees have matured it is time to thin the orchard. We will also use this opportunity to re-seed the orchard floor with a mixture of legumes and grasses as we move toward sustainalbe/bio- rationale management practices. If possible we will still try to market pecans at the Downtown Lawrence Farmer's Market. |
